In one of his writings, ibn Taymiyah stated:

[والسلف كانوا يحسنون القرآن بأصواتهم من غير أن يتكلفوا أوزان الغناء، مثل ما كان أبو موسى الأشعري يفعل، فقد ثبت في الصحيح عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال: (لقد أوتي هذا مزمازا من مزامير آل داود) وكان عمر يقول لأبي موسى الأشعري: يا أبا موسى، ذكرنا ربنا، فيقرأ أبو موسى وهم يستمعون لقراءته.]

The salaf used to beautify the Qur'an with their voices but without taking on the extra step of following set musical forms.

Take for example what Abu Moosaa al-Ash'ari used to do, for it is authentically transmitted that the Prophet said, "This man has been endowed with a beautiful voice the likes of those beautiful voices of Dawud's household." And 'Umar once said to Abu Moosaa al-Ash'ari, "O Abu Moosaa, remind us of our Lord," so Abu Moosaa recited while they listened to his recitation.
